A “British” education prides itself on providing high quality education and developing well-rounded individuals, nurturing each student holistically. We believe it is not just about learning information, but about creating independent thinkers who are resilient and adaptable.
Understanding the curriculum
We use the term British but the curriculum taught at The British School of Amsterdam is the National Curriculum used in England, and the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). The EYFS sets the standards for the learning, development and care of a child from birth to 5 years old. After the EYFS our children will broadly follow the National Curriculum for England.
The curriculum is broken down into four key stages from Key Stage 1 (KS1) to Key Stage 4 (KS4). The curriculum sets out the most important knowledge and skills that every student has the right to learn. It is a teaching framework which determines what should be taught and identifies targets for learning. Our year groups are arranged depending on chronological age and according to the UK academic year, which runs from 1 September until 31 August.
Small class sizes combined with subject specialist teachers allow staff to deliver a high level of attention to each student, ensuring a deeper understanding of a subject and the ability to move beyond the National Curriculum. An emphasis on extra-curricular activities allows students to develop their education outside of the classroom and provide them with the time and opportunity to follow their interests.
International environment
We are an accredited school providing an outstanding education to the international community of Amsterdam. As the only school in the city to offer a British education, we feel privileged to call Amsterdam home.
The city is famed for its relaxed and high quality of life. It is therefore the best of both worlds when, as well as the quality of life, there is also a quality of education to match. Here at The British School of Amsterdam, you can both learn well and live well.
We are enthusiastic about our role as a hub and meeting point for families from all over the world. The nurturing of a robust and mutually rewarding school community is central to the school.
